Geohashing

I’d like to share a recent XKCD comic:

That, in turn linked to a brilliant app at xkcd.com/geohashing, along with a link about geohashing.  I’m up on geoCACHing, but this was new.  My favorite part is that there’s this formula that produces these results, but I’m still unsure of what exactly to do with it!  My first thought is to use it as a basis to hide a real geocache locally (seeded with my birthday or something?  our wedding date?).

Let’s celebrate!  Here’s what I think would be fun….

• Having a giant tire fire in the back yard
• Drive fast to work
• At any stop sign or light, rev the engine to spend more gas
• Go the store and buy as many aerosol cans as possible, and use them all in the parking lot.  Ask the clerk for the ones with the most CFCs.
• Visit nearby Michigan State’s campus, and hold a rally.  Have signs and shirts saying “Down with Ozone!” and spray the aerosol cans around.  Preferably near an Earth Day celebration rally.
• Fill up any number of gas powered small engines, mowers, chainsaws, weed whackers, etc., and just let them run.

Any other suggestions?

Flat panel LCD TVs in hotels are great and all as a selling point. But what’s the point of having that great high definition set if you’re still gonna have crappy analog cable hooked up to it? And the thing is, standard definition analog cable looks worse on that widescreen LCD than it would on a regular tube TV!

You’ve seen the commercials lately for the Rhapsody/Tivo tie-in with Sara Bareilles, right? The one with that highly overplayed “gonna write you a love sooong” bit? What happened to the original where she shared time with the Cool Kids?

Why are the current ones playing both songs by her? Wasn’t the whole point that you had a jukebox through your Tivo that catered to you, no matter how eclectic your tastes were? What the heck is the point of just switching to another song by the same artist? Bah!

Thank, you Daily Show, for showing that you’re the best thing on TV lately until the writers get their thumbs out of their assess and write some more predictable rehashed story lines we’ve probably already seen, but at least it will be new. I never would have expected to see a graphic of the state of Michigan used this way, but it’s awesome:

Thank you Gizmodo, for taking me down memory lane celebrating 50 years of LEGO.  Check the link for some of their top sets of all time.  I think the Black Monarch’s Castle and the Black Seas Barracuda are my personal favorites from way-back-when.

Is it bad that I may actually look forward to children just so that I have a legitimate use to have LEGOs around again?

Can someone explain what’s behind this movement I keep reading about regarding “eco friendly” Christmas trees?  From the Lifehacker link:

Web site The Daily green suggests several green options that won’t require cutting down and transporting trees or buying oil-derived fake plastic trees, like going for a live, plantable tree, decorating a tree outdoors, or—if you must—buying US-made artificial trees to reduce the carbon footprint from transportation.

Maybe I’m missing something, but isn’t cutting a real tree about a “eco friendly” as you can get?  Christmas trees from a farm are a renewable resource, and biodegradable at that!

Ugh, this sounded totally awesome until I saw the price tag - $50k?!?
