I heard this mentioned on the radio this morning, and found the Yahoo article about a newly released poll that votes ‘Rocky II’ KO scene the best film sporting moment ever. I have to say this is probably the most moronic list I’ve ever seen. First, I present The List:

10. Eddie Felson’s rematch with Minnesota Fats (The Hustler)

9. Cole Trickle wins the Daytona 500 (Days Of Thunder)

8. Jess Bhamra scores in the cup final (Bend It Like Beckham)

7. Pele’s overhead kick (Escape To Victory)

6. Rocky’s Siberian mountain training (Rocky IV)

5. Harold Abrahams completes race before clock strikes 12 (Chariots Of Fire )

4. Jake La Motta’s final bout with Sugar Ray Robinson (Raging Bull)

3. Happy Gilmore’s winning shot against Shooter Mcgavin (Happy Gilmore )

2. Daniel Larusso assumes the Crane technique stance (The Karate Kid)

1. Rocky knocks out Apollo (Rocky II)

I do have to give them props for including Happy Gilmore. And the Rocky series deserves to be on any Top ‘x’ list when it comes to sports movies. But what the crap is Days of Thunder and Bend It Like Beckham doing on there? F-ing Pele?? Who the crap has even seen that?

Noticeably missing, in no particular order….where is The Natural, Hoosiers, Field of Dreams, Rudy, Slapshot, or Space Jam? Come on! What else do you think is missing?

  1. bah, 2 and 3 are the cheesiest sports moments of all time, not the best moments of all time. If you are going to include movies like Days of Thunder, why stop there? Why not throw BASEketball or Over the Top in there too.

Although I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never seen Hoosiers, I’ve heard great things about it. I heard the scene where the coach gives them their pep talk at the finals is pretty cool. I definitely agree that the Natural and Rudy should’ve had a spot on the list. And what about the Sandlot? That movie was huge back in the day.

  2. Ahhh, I forgot all about the Sandlot! That was awesome! I also forgot ‘Remember the Titans’, too.

I think I had to watch Hoosiers back in junior high PE class….it’s been a long time, though. I just know it to be one of those “classic” sports movies.

  3. Ok… Days of Thunder is one badassed movie, and if anything should be higher on the list… and yes Remember the Titans should definately be on there… also possibly The Program.

  4. Man, miss reading Ft for a couple of days and I miss out on commenting on your blog. Remember the Titans is one of my all time favorite sport movies. That is such a moving movie and it gives me goosebumps everytime I watch it. Another good movie is about bowling - the big lebowski. Yippe Kay Yay!
