It’s almost the eve of Christmas Eve, and the Spirit is everywhere: Grape Road and every side road leading to it (because they ALL lead to or through it) is jam packed in the mall district, funneling everyone from the greater Michiana area through the main artery of South Bend. Christmas songs are in the air, because every single radio station is playing them around the clock at this point. All which leads me to this thought…
Everyone has their favorite Christmas lists…favorite movies, favorite traditions, favorite music, etc. In true Grinch fashion, how about a change? What are your least favorite Christmas songs? What are the songs that cause you to scream at the radio, punching the tuner to change channels when they come on? What songs fill you with the anti-spirit, enraging you that they were ever created in the first place?
I’ll lead things off with two nominations:
First, I present Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime”. I can’t seem to find an internet link to an MP3, and that site just has crappy Real Audio, but you’ve probably heard it before. Here are the lyrics. I don’t know what it is – the cheesy lyrics, the goofy synthesizer, the fucking all around retardedness of how it sounds….it drives me crazy. Maybe it’s the years of milking cows on Christmas Eve and having that come on WJR over and over and not being able to do anything about it. But whenever I hear it now it drives me to a rage, and if I’m in the car, not only does it cause me to change the channel but I also begin a verbal tirade focused at the radio.
Coming up second is a song I’ve never heard before this year, but now it’s on almost every radio station throughout the day. Granted, it is usually played as a joke, but it still is steadily climbing up my nerves. I present to you a 1953 performance of Gayla Peevey singing “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas”: Click here to listen courtesy of this site. It annoys me, but I can’t seem to stop listening – it’s like watching a train wreck. Maybe it’s like listening to a train wreck? I’m guessing that most of the irritation stems from the severely dated sound of a young girl singing in the 50’s. It’s a good thing that crap doesn’t fly these days.
So those are mine…what are yours?

Adam Sandler’s Hannukkkah song. Not because I don’t like it or think it’s annoying. I just can’t get it out of my head after hearing it.

Oops, the link to the wav file was broken – should be fixed now! And no kidding about the Hannukkkah song…if it’s played, it’s stuck in my head. Or if I think about it this time of year, its stuck in my head and I want the radio to play it! It’s not on my most hated playlist though

Entertainment Weekly published the original lyrics to Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Every time I hear it now, I think of these cheery words:
“Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
It may be your last.”
