I’ve read somewhere about underground “fight clubs” springing up around Silicon Valley types, where computer professionals and software programmers get together in basements or garages, and duke it out “Fight Club” style. I honestly don’t remember where I first heard of them…I want to say Maxim or something; a quick search on Slashdot shows a story there, with a link to a USA Today article. I vaguely remember the Slashdot one, but I don’t recall the source…maybe it was a Reuters news or something. Anyway….the point is, I heard about this stuff going on, but had not seen any pictures or many details about it.

Cue a gallery I saw this morning on Wired News where I saw this:

Come on, guys. From one of the captions: “Fighters wear basic protection. Mouthguards, cups, fencing masks and gloves are required for most fights.” Gahhhhh! Here I was thinking there were these crazy dorks out there beating themselves up, trying to bring some ounce of cool to the group, and they wear freakin’ mouthguards AND fencing masks!! They begin fights with dull aluminum knives.
I’m not saying that if it was a bare-knuckles brawl, I’d jump in. But that’s the point – normal sane people aren’t crazy enough to do something like that. Where’s the threat of harm in wrestling around with protective gear?

All in all, I guess I’m just disappointed. I had my hopes up for that there was this actual thing going on, and now it’s just a dorkified sham. Imagine Brad Pitt or Edward Norton putting on padding and facemasks.
