In quite possibly the biggest news of the day, the original Star Wars trilogy (as seen in theaters) will be released on DVD this September!
“In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you’ll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.”
Some thoughts:
If you’ve already bought the re-re-release of the films in 2004, this kinda sucks. Right now, from what I understand, the only way to watch the original Star Wars movies as they were in theaters is to either have the VHS tapes, or the laser disc version, or a bootlegged copy of either of those. So if you bought into the hype in 2004 and got those versions (which had altered scenes, CGI changes, etc.), the only way to get the original versions is to buy this set which includes the DVDs you already bought.
This doesn’t apply to me, though. We had the old 1997 VHS tapes, but I never got any of the recent DVDs. Sooooooo…..[are you listening Santa?]….come September I may just have to get these three new editions. Damn you, George Lucas, and your money making schemes!
