NCAA Bans Indian Mascots From Postseason – Yahoo! News

And for today’s Fucking Retarded Moment we have the NCAA, once again hosing things up. Actually, according to the article I don’t know if I’d fully blame the NCAA. I think a swift kick in the ass to Vernon Bellecourt, president of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media, would help a lot, too. So what I don’t get – say Illinois makes the NCAA basketball tournament next year (yeah, I know, thats a stretch )…they can’t wear their mascot name on their jerseys, or chant their mascot (team) name?!? How completely idiotic is that? People catering to special interest groups at the slightest whine is all of whats wrong with the world today. Hell, if I had the means, I’d start or run a major corporation and piss as many people off as I could. Just out of spite. What about all of those of Greek Spartan descent that are offended by Michigan State’s mascot? I mean, come on, people. What the hell?

  1. Its not just that the names ‘offend’ people, but that some of the names are outright racist, like the SE Oklahoma St Savages. The NCAA has said its fine with native nicknames that aren’t racist, like the UNC-Pembroke Braves.

  2. I would like to think that at this point in time, there is some separation between mascots and the “offensive” items they pertain to. Sure, there are Savages and Braves and whatnot, but they’ve become associated with respective teams and the spirit of that team. People don’t root for a SE Oklahoma St team and associate it with Native Americans. And I’m saying they shouldn’t. The “Savages” title has been disassociated, and is simply a team name now.
